Mr Gauri Shankar had attended the Chinmaya Balavihar Camp at the Sandeepany Sadhnalaya Ashram at Powai and taught us some shlokas. Gauri Shankar, I was an active Chinamayite then. The track was a mixture of Sanskrit Slokas from Rigveda, and their translations in Hindi. The music for the the title track was done by the famous composer Vanraj Bhatia. The opposites that are yet complementary entities whose interaction produced and maintained everything.ĭoes this not sound like the saying " The Lord said 'let there be light ' and there was light"? From 'ASAT' -( Non-being) arose 'SAT'- (being). Thus desire- Kama ( desire or lust ) is found to be the cause of creation. How was it formed or was it not formed at all? God only knows Maybe he knows Maybe he knows not"2 There was, however, only one thing: 'Breath which breathed breathlessly.' This breath desired to create and there was creation. There was neither mortality nor immortality, neither any form nor name, neither day nor night. The NASADIYA SUKTA also of Rig Veda gives another account which says " In the beginning there was neither existence nor non- existence, no realm, no sky, no air, no earth. In the Rig Veda, there is a sukta or a great hymn called Nasadiya Sukta. I discovered later that it was an extract from the Rigveda. Then who can tell from whence it came to be? Whence was it born? Whence issued this creation? I'd rather be disliked for what I am than loved for what I'm not.Who really knows? Who can presume to tell it? My experiences in life have made me liberal, broad-minded and more tolerant of other people and their views. I am not a great conversationalist though I can be articulate when the occasion demands. I like psychedelic, progressive & classical rock music. Kubrick, Hitchcock, Welles, Ray, Fellini & Kurosawa being my favorites. I love old classical & dark Hollywood movies. I am reasonably intelligent and well-read, yet forgetful and prone to silly mistakes. I am not religious though I am spiritual and believe in a higher power. I get emotional about people and believe in being good, sympathetic and forgiving. And its' never too late :) I tend to form few friendships and the friendships I form are lasting. I try to do the best I can in everything I do I am an idealist but circumstances have always tried to convince that life doesn't work out the way I wish for or predict. I am a poet and a dreamer, but also a realist and an optimist. What separated it from the Ramayana and Mahabharata of the days was the bare and realistic approach to the facts- It had no pomp or grandeur and there lied the strength of the director.
But those of us who did watch it- it was a lifetime experience, from Om Puri intro voice to the actors enacting the days and era gone by- it was mesmerizing for kids like us. I remember the days when it was being telecast and not many had heard of it and had any inclination for it as well. Now this may be depiction of Portuguese Mughal conflict for trade interests or an episode where small songs for each of six seasons were sung in traditional tones.
It is evident that more emphasis is placed on social and economic moorings. There were some episodes with more philosophical value rather than historical like one in which India law on parentage is illustrated by a boy being branded shudra though his mother was a vaisya, his biological father a Brahman and his adopted father was a kshatriya king or the one involving Ashoka's brother and how he turns to become a Buddhist monk. Costumes of all the ages have been captured very efficiently and some of the episodes are my favorite like one on civil disobedience in 1930, quit India in 1942, Shivaji 1 (It is the only televised account of Shivaji in which his conflicts with local Hindu chieftains are shown). Anyone who keeps on branding Veda communal will have an idea of deep philosophy inherent in them by listening to the tracks. It has a characteristic Shyam benegal style of concentrating on mental conflicts rather than showing war details or opulence of courts.
